RRBO describes a base oil produced by re-refining used oil. It does not, by itself, specify viscosity grade, volatility, oxidation stability, sulphur, saturates, response to additives or fitness for a particular engine or industrial application.
Two re-refined base oils can differ because of feedstock, process configuration, cut selection, finishing severity and quality control. Procurement specifications must therefore be property- and consistency-based.
Finished performance remains formulation-specific
The finished lubricant combines base stocks, performance additives, viscosity modifiers and other components. Compatibility and performance must be demonstrated for the claimed specification and application.
A change from virgin to re-refined base stock can be technically successful, but acceptable interchange cannot be inferred from sustainability value or a limited certificate of analysis.
Make two claims, prove two claims
A recycled-content or circularity claim needs a defined accounting method, mass boundary and supporting records. A performance claim needs suitable test and approval evidence.
Combining them in one marketing sentence does not reduce either burden of proof. Strong communication states the recycled-content basis and performance evidence separately.
